The BIOS chip controls the computer's boot process.
The GA-7ZX motherboard from Gigabyte uses "Socket A" technology to provide support for AMD Athlon or Duron processors. The on-board BIOS chip contains firmware used to start the computer and initialize the hardware, ready to hand over control to the operating system. You can update the BIOS to the latest version using the Gigabyte @BIOS utility, which allows you to flash the BIOS from within Windows. Flashing the BIOS can fix existing hardware problems, or add features to the motherboard and support for new hardware.
Instructions
1. Download the latest version of the @BIOS utility for the board from the Gigabyte support site. Go to the page for the GA-7ZX motherboard and then click "Utility List" from the menu on the left of the screen. Scroll down to the "@BIOS" listing and click on the download link (see Resources). Save the file to your computer's hard disk.
2. Right-click on the Windows "Start" button, then click "Open Windows Explorer." Navigate to the directory where you saved the @BIOS file and double-click to extract the files. Choose the location where to extract the files to and click "Extract." Double-click on the "Setup" file in the "atBIOS" folder created when the extraction has completed. Follow the instructions to complete the setup process.
3. Download the latest FG BIOS file from the GA-7ZX motherboard BIOS page. Double-click on the downloaded file and select the location for the extracted file. This creates a BIOS file named "72X.FG."
4. Close any applications running under Windows, and temporarily disable any antivirus or firewall software that may interfere with the flashing process.
5. Launch the @BIOS application from the Windows Start menu. Click "Save Current BIOS" to make a backup copy of the currently installed BIOS on your motherboard. Revert to this copy if there are any problems with the new BIOS.
6. Click the "Update New BIOS" button. Browse to the location of the "72X.FG" BIOS file and click "Open." Click "OK" when asked if you want to update the BIOS. The bar at the bottom of the @BIOS window displays the progress. Click "OK" when the flash processes completes. Click "Exit" to close @BIOS.
7. Restart the computer. As the computer boots, the POST screen displays the new BIOS version.
