Use A Dell Heatsink With A 478 Motherboard

A Dell heat sink can be installed onto a Socket 478 motherboard to provide cooling capacity to the Pentium 4, Celeron, or other Socket 478 processor. By doing so you can avoid overheating and the related shutdowns or processor damage caused by an inadequate heat sink and cooling fan, keep the processor running cool during normal operation and when the system is running at full capacity and provide the extra cooling capacity necessary when running a processor at the higher speeds found when overclocking.

Instructions

1. Put on the anti-static wrist strap prior to opening the case. Make sure the power is off and disconnected from the source and that the computer is completely shut down.

2. Scrape the bottom of the Dell heat sink with a plastic scraper to remove the bulk of thermal cooling compound from the surface of the heat sink.

3. Scrub the heatsink using 91% Isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth to remove any traces of thermal compound or other contaminants.

4. Scrape the top of the Socket 478 processor with a plastic scraper to remove the bulk of thermal cooling compound from the surface of the processor. Be careful to avoid bending any pins if the processor is not mounted in the socket.

5. Scrub the top of the Socket 478 processor using 91% Isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth to remove any traces of thermal compound or other contaminants.

6. Mount the processor into the motherboard by raising the locking lever and inserting the processor as indicated by the small triangular marking or cut corner of the processor and the matching marking on the socket. Lower the locking lever into the locked position.

7. Apply a thin layer of thermal heat sink compound that covers the chip. Place the Dell heat sink squarely down onto the Socket 478 processor and attach it using the mounting hardware that came with the heat sink. In some cases the mounting brackets on the Socket 478 motherboard may need to be changed to match the Dell heat sink (See second listing in "Resources").
