The CPU fan keeps your P30's CPU from overheating.
The CPU fan is one of the most essential parts of your Toshiba Satellite P30. Modern processors generate extreme amounts of heat, and without a fan to keep them cool they will quickly overheat. An overheated processor will cause your computer to shut down and likely cause permanent damage. There are actually two CPU fans in the P30. If you think one of your CPU fans in your P30 is going bad, you should replace it as soon as possible. Doing so requires only a few basic tools.
Instructions
1. Unplug the power cord from your laptop and lay it face down with the front facing you. Remove the battery by sliding and holding the release switch and pulling the battery out of the bay.
2. Remove the two screws holding the hard-drive cover in place and remove the cover. The hard-drive cover is located on the right side of the laptop base. Slide the hard drive to the right to disconnect it from the motherboard and lift it out of the hard-drive bay.
3. Remove the three screws holding the center cover in place and remove the cover, revealing the memory sticks and wireless card. Spread the latches on the sides of the memory sticks to pop them up. Slide them out of the sockets. Remove the screw holding the metal wireless card brace in place and remove the brace. Disconnect the antenna cables from the card and slide it out of the socket.
4. Remove the single screw, located to the left of the Toshiba label, holding the optical drive in place. The edge of the optical drive is visible in the hard-drive bay. Use your finger to push the back edge of the optical drive and slide the drive out of the laptop base.
5. Remove the 17 screws remaining on the bottom of the laptop. Turn the laptop over and open the display panel.
6. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry up the keyboard bezel above the keyboard. Remove the bezel. Remove the two screws holding the keyboard in place. Use a screwdriver to press down the lock above the "F8" key and lift the keyboard up. Disconnect the keyboard cable from the motherboard and remove the keyboard.
7. Pull the wireless antenna cables through the hole in the motherboard. Unplug the display cable from the motherboard. Remove the two screws holding the display panel in place and lift it straight up to remove it.
8. Disconnect the touchpad cable from the motherboard. Remove the six screws holding the top cover in place. use a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the top cover off of the laptop base. Lift up and remove the top cover.
9. Use a hex screwdriver to remove the two screws on either side of the VGA port. Disconnect the speaker cables from the motherboard. Remove the three screws holding the motherboard in place. Lift up the left side of the motherboard and slide it out of the laptop base.
10. Remove the four screws holding the CPU fans in place. Turn the motherboard over and disconnect the fan cables from the motherboard. Remove the fans. Replace them with new fans and reassemble your P30.
