Replace Dell Dimension 4550 Motherboards

You may have to upgrade your motherboard to accomodate major system upgrades.


Reasons to replace a computer motherboard vary. You may want to ensure compatibility with an upgraded processor, gain more expansion ports or replace a damaged motherboard.


You won't need many tools to replace a Dell Dimension 4550 motherboard. You don't even need a screwdriver to open the 4550's case. You may need a screwdriver to remove components from the computer or motherboard to gain access for replacement.


Instructions


Removal


1. Turn off the computer and disconnect all wires and devices.


2. Press the power button while the system is powered off to ground the motherboard.


3. Open the computer case by turning the computer on its side, pushing the release buttons on the top and bottom of the case and lifting the cover up.


4. Remove all wires from the motherboard and any components that may obstruct access.


5. Pull the tab at the front of the motherboard and slide the motherboard and attached metal tray toward the front of the computer case and lift it away.


Prepare New Motherboard


6. Place the new motherboard next to the old motherboard. This will help ensure that components and jumpers are configured correctly on the new motherboard.


7. Swap any components from the old motherboard to the new motherboard that will be used. This includes RAM chips and the CPU assembly if new ones are not being used.


8. Set the jumpers on the new motherboard in the same configuration as the jumpers on the old motherboard, if applicable.


Installation


9. Align the tabs on the new motherboard to the tabs on the computer frame.


10. Slide the motherboard back until it seats into place with an audible click.


11. Replace any cables and components to the motherboard.


12. Close the computer case and reconnect all cables.
