Over time, your Pentium 4.2 GHz processor on your Windows-based PC will begin to run more slowly due to a buildup of folders, program installations and system errors. Computers come with a multitude of tools to restore performance to its former state with the help of utilities such as disk check, disk cleanup and cache cleanup. Run such utilities on a bi-weekly to monthly basis to ensure your computer performs at a consistently efficient level. The work may take several hours to complete, depending on the size of your computer's hard drive.
Instructions
Disk Check
1. Click "Start" on the desktop and "Computer" on the pop-up menu.
2. Right-click "Hard drive" and click "Properties." Click "Tools" and "Check Now."
3. Click "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" and "Start."
Disk Cleanup
4. Click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories" and "System Tools."
5. Click "Disk Cleanup."
6. Check the files to erase in the cleanup window, click "OK" and "Delete Files."
Cache Clearing
7. Click "Internet Explorer."
8. Click "Tools" and "Internet Options" from the Internet Explorer menu.
9. Click "General" and "Delete Deletes" in "Temporary Internet Files." Change the number in the history section to 1.
10. Click "OK."
