The IBM ThinkPad R40 -- which, after the purchase of the IBM PC Company Division, was re-branded as the Lenovo ThinkPad R40 -- is an entry-level laptop computer that comes in an array of variants. For example, the ThinkPad R40 can come with a 13.3 inch, 14.1 inch or 15.0 inch TFT display. Other specifications also vary, depending on the configuration of the model.
Processor
The IBM ThinkPad R40 can be equipped with Intel Mobile Pentium 4 Processor-M operating at 1.8, 1.9, 2.0, 2.2,or 2.4 GHz; Intel Mobile Celeron processors working at 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0 GHz, or an Intel Pentium M Processor with a speed of 1.3, 1.4, or 1.5 GHz. L2, or secondary, cache differs, depending on the processor. As far as secondary cache, Pentium M models have 1 megabyte, Pentium 4 models are equipped with 512 kilobytes, and Celeron models feature 256 kilobytes.
Display and Graphic Controllers
The computer can feature a 13.3-inch, 14.1-inch or 15.0-inch TFT display. The IBM ThinkPad R40 comes with either a 16-megabyte ATI Mobility RADEON video chipset or a 32-megabyte ATI Mobility RADEON 7500 video chipset.
Drives
The IBM ThinkPad R40 features a CD-RW/DVD. A floppy drive is available with some systems via an Ultrabay 2000 or USB connection. The laptop is equipped with a 20-gigabyte, 40-gigabyte, or 60-gigabyte hard-drive disc. HDDs work at speeds of up to 5400 rpm.

A number of operating systems are supported by the IBM ThinkPad R40, including Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 98 Gold 1, Windows NT 4.0 SP6a, Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition. The computer is equipped with two USB 2.0 ports, a parallel port, two audio ports, an S-Video out port, an CRT port for an external monitor, and built-in RJ-45 and RJ-11 connectors for LAN and telephony connections.
